Established
in 2002, the Student Work Program at the West Virginia Schools for the Deaf
and Blind is intended for students to earn spending money by performing work
assignments around the school.
This program
is open to students from low income families who are in the seventh grade or
higher. Jobs include assisting in the dining room, light office work,
grounds keeping, assisting in the dorms, and other jobs that will give the
students a chance to earn there own spending money. The rewards to the young
people are great. It teaches responsibility and gives the students
self-pride and a feeling of accomplishment.
Each
student must sign a contract agreeing to show up on time and do the work he
or she has selected. Time sheets are kept by each and they are approved by
the supervisor of the area in which the work is being preformed. The pay
rate is $3.00 an hour and the student may work up to 20 hours in a two-week
period. The students receive a check from the WV Lions student work program
every two weeks.
