Application to be a Host Family

National Newsletter:  March 2008

The West Virginia Lions Youth Exchange Program has resulted in receiving youth ages 15-21 into WV Lions sponsored host families for six week/short term visits, typically during the summer or when school is out.

The Program has also been responsible for sending West Virginia youth overseas for visits with host families sponsored by Lions Clubs in the countries visited.  Our annual Youth Exchange Scholarship Contest has assisted in this effort.

The WV Lions Youth Exchange Program is funded primarily through donations by WV Lions Clubs, and we are extremely grateful for your help and support.

We need your support to continue this program.  Please remember us in your list of favored programs.

Winners of 2007 Scholarships Announced

The 12th Annual WV Lions Youth Exchange Scholarship Contest concluded on January 13th, with the naming of the following winners:

1st place ($2,500) – Megan Gainer, senior at Roane County High School (Australia)

2nd place ($1,500) – Scott McArthur, junior at Elkins High School (Finland)

3rd place ($1,000) – Emily Donegia, sophomore at Philip Barbour High (Japan)

Eight semi-finalists from around the state competed in the final competition held at VFW Post 573 in Clarksburg.  Interviews were conducted by a 3-member panel of judges, consisting of two professors from West Virginia Wesleyan College, Thomas Schoffler and Ashley Lawson, along with MD29 YE Chair, Lion Cindy Glass.  Assisting were Lions Paul Nutter, Linda Ott, Judy Butcher, Connie Dorscheid and Sue Via, all members of the Lions Youth Exchange Committee, as well as Lions Patty Nutter and Steve Glass.

The winning students will complete their exchanges during the upcoming summer with Lions sponsored host families in Australia, Finland and Japan.  The scholarship funds are designed to assist with travel expenses incurred in completing the trips.  Scholarship money must be used in connection with a Lions Youth Exchange trip.  If for some reason a winner cannot do the exchange, the individual will instead receive savings bonds and an alternate will fill the spot and receive the scholarship.

The scholarships go toward travel expenses involved with participating in the Lions Youth Exchange Program. Recipients will go overseas this summer for 6-week visits with Lions-sponsored host families in Finland, Australia or Japan.  Lions Clubs in the visited country will sponsor the host families for the WV youth.

All funding for the scholarship program comes from the Lions of West Virginia.  The committee would like to award one or more $500 travel grants to other applicants if funds are available.  If you haven't already done so, please consider an individual or club donation.  Make checks payable to WV Lions Youth Exchange and send to Lion Linda Ott, Secretary/Treasurer, 3 Lakeland Park Drive, Bridgeport, WV 26330. You can help provide a West Virginia student with a life changing and inspirational experience through Youth Exchange.

This spring WV Lions will searching for host families for incoming Finnish and Japanese students for 6-week stays starting in mid-June and mid-July, respectively. The students bring their own spending money and insurance. Host families provide room and board, treat the youth as loved family members, and share our culture and learn from theirs. These families are not required to be Lions or have children in the home.
